The procedure is carried out under intravenous sedation. Sedation is an injection in the back of the hand, which makes you feel less anxious. Although you will be awake, the effect of sedation will relax you sufficiently to enable treatment to be carried out. Most patients will not remember the treatment. Verbal contact will be maintained at all times, and the level of sedation can be altered as required.
After the treatment, there should only be mild discomfort, which should be controlled with regular painkillers.
