Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic dental implants are an advanced tooth replacement solution designed for patients who have experienced severe bone loss in the upper jaw.

Unlike traditional dental implants, which are anchored into the jawbone, zygomatic implants are longer and are anchored into the cheekbone (zygoma) — a dense and stable bone that provides strong support.

This technique is ideal for patients who have been told they are not candidates for regular implants due to insufficient bone, and it often eliminates the need for bone grafting.

How do they work?

Zygomatic implants differ from conventional implants in placement and design:

  • Placement: The implants are anchored into the zygomatic (cheek) bone instead of the upper jawbone.
  • Length and angle: They are longer than standard implants and are inserted at a specialised angle to reach the zygoma.
  • Support: Often combined with regular implants in the front of the mouth to fully support a dental bridge or fixed prosthesis.

This approach allows many patients to receive a full set of upper teeth (often called All-on-4 with zygomatic support) in a single procedure, sometimes even the same day as implant placement.

Benefits of zygomatic implants

  • No bone grafting needed: Zygomatic implants bypass the need for bone grafts, sinus lifts, or long healing times.
  • Faster treatment: Many patients can receive implants and a temporary prosthesis in one visit — a procedure sometimes called “Teeth in a Day.”
  • High success rate: With proper planning and experienced care, zygomatic implants have a high long-term success and patient satisfaction.
  • Improved quality of life: Patients often report better chewing function, improved speech, and a dramatic boost in self-confidence.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the recovery time?

Most patients resume normal activity within a few days. Full healing typically occurs over 3–6 months.

How long do zygomatic implants last?

With proper care and hygiene, zygomatic implants can last many years — often decades.

Are zygomatic implants painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort after surgery, which can be managed with medication. The procedure itself is performed under anaesthesia.
